I had convinced myself that I wasn’t going to visit Kings Wood in Challock again this year, the weather forecast looked dreary with rain over the weekend which would probably batter any existing bluebells but then I saw a forecast for a bit of drizzle and thought it might look good, so…
We set off for Challock in order to be there for dawn, driving through some nice misty conditions on the way but there was none in the woods when we arrived. The bluebells were, however, in fine form with lush carpets of colour blanketing the open spaces between the trees with vibrant young almost impossibly green leaves above.
The sky had been threatening colour on our journey over and as I stood taking photographs, the sun broke through the low clouds and lit up the woodland – but only for a short while. Light mist and drizzle added a nice atmosphere to the scene along with a short burst of rain which is possibly why we were the only people in the woods that morning.
Well worth the 4 am alarm! I can always sleep tomorrow
